Characters

The main characters are Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, Disgust, and Bing bong and Riley’s Mother and father. Joy is the protagonist of the movie. She appears to be the leader of the emotions that live inside of Riley’s head, she also appears to be positive and happy all the time. Sadness is second to joy as the protagonist in the movie, She is the voice of reason and she appears to be sad and depressed most of the time. Fear is one of the five emotions and his job is to protect Riley and keep her safe all of the time. Anger is one of the five emotions and he cares very deeply about things being fair for Riley. Disgust is the green emotion and she also protects Riley from getting poisoned both physically and socially. Bing Bong is the imaginary friend of Riley when Riley was a kid. Riley’s Mother and Father is her parents that loves, supports and take cares of her.

The movie is about a girl named Riley, she was a happy girl with a lots of friends, plays on a magnificent hockey team in Minnesota and loves her parents so much. As shown, there are five emotion characters that lives inside of Riley’s head. One day the house was sold and Riley and her family needed to move. They moved into a small house in San Francisco. Since the start there was Joy and Sadness came along and followed by Fear, Disgust, and Anger. The event made riley burst out a lot of emotion of anger disgust and fear. On Riley’s first day of school in San Francisco, Joy was not happy about what was happening to Riley, so she decided to replay a core memory which Sadness accidentally touched and changed the core memory a sad memory. A core memory is the most important memories of a person as it forms the personality of the person. Joy tried to fix the core memory but it didn’t work. It caused chaos in the headquarters (the room where the emotions lives), the short term memories and the core memories were getting siphoned into the long term memories and Joy wanted to prevent it but accidentally she and Sadness were sucked into the long term memories. Joy and Sadness is now on a quest to go back and put That’s when Riley acted strange, since Joy isn’t there to help her, she was stuck with anger, disgust, and fear. Joy is blaming everything that has happened to Sadness, because she keeps on meddling with the memories. Anger, disgust and fear didn’t know what to do to make Riley happy, until Anger found what he think is a solution, for Riley to go back to Minnesota since he said that all the core memories have formed, and thought that if Riley could go back there she could make some more. So Long, Joy and Sadness were able to go back to the headquarters and Joy were finally able to understand what was the importance of Sadness and is able to accept and to let Sadness touch the core memories. The headquarters improved as Riley matures.

What is the Human Person? As shown in the movie there are five main characters that lives in the headquarters. Each and every one of them has a very important role for the human being. Without even one of it, we have a breakdown and not properly work well. This shows us that the human person is not really made up of a single thing at all. We are made up of many thing that comes together that makes us, us.

. The movie shows Riley was unable to be happy because Joy isn’t there, and this brings up the point that the movie tells us the human being is consisted of many things. One of the elements that is about the human person in the movie is the things that are guiding (the emotions) Riley is different from the Riley herself as the body. As she grows up and continue to gain more and more experiences the body improves, as shown in the near end of the movie that the “controller” that the emotions use are much better than before.  Another element is the soul of Riley is like the combination of the five emotions that is working well, not just Joy but the five of them working together as one, it is like the headquarters (the place where the five emotions live and do their job). Another element is that the emotions have full knowledge whether if what they are doing is good for riley or bad for riley like Joy knows what she should be doing and Sadness knows what she should be doing.

The emotions also have free will as anger provides a plan that will get Riley happy if they go back to Minnesota. It is not the job of Anger to make Riley happy but still, he thought a plan that he thought will make Riley happy. I would like to ask why does the emotions have their own emotion and free will? Joy cries after seeing the blue core memory while she was on the dump of memories. Crying because all her life she rejected sadness and thought that she was useless for Riley.

The characters or the emotions are quite relatable. I relate with Joy the most, when I was still a kid I wanted all the stuff and attention to be mine. Since I was the last kid before my little sister was born I gained what I wanted. I thought of myself of something that is unreachable to others I always looked down on others thinking that I am much better than they are, but now I realized that giving is much better, looking straight on peoples faces feels much better than looking down at them.I feel the best when I help people and I see their smile on their faces I feel their happiness. Seeing Joy change from her narcissistic self made me remember my past self and made me look back on how I am now today.

I realized that at some point we break up so that we can build a new better self. The journey of Joy and Sadness made me think that it is not the end point that matters but the journey itself. Joy and Sadness were friends now that they understand what the role of each other was. Judging not by the surface of the person but we need to understand someone deeply. We sometimes see ourselves get overcome by emotions but sometimes it is better to accept those emotions. I realized that forcing to be happy all the time even though the situation is not really suitable to be happy at the moment. Forcing happiness is not always good. Being happy is not always about Joy. There is more on Happiness than so much positivity. As we can see on the movies final scenes that Joy let Sadness touch the core memory and Riley seems to achieve a deeper more mature form of happiness. I always wondered why do people need to be sad, and then I realized that sadness is really important because it makes a very deep connection to people. Embracing those strong emotions and letting them out is part of being sad. The scene where bing bong cries because he lost his rocket and sadness came up to him and he cried and hugged sadness but he was able to recover from the situation. Ever wondered why it feels so good to cry not because of what happened but the motion of crying itself, after letting out a long tearing it feels good, that is sadness’ role. Our memories make up our personalities and help us determine who we really are as a person.
