What did i learn today?
Today, i learned about Logical support which is categorized into two types called deductive arguments and inductive arguments. Deductive arguments brings forth true conclusions. Inductive arguments bring forth conclusions that are likely to be true (not sure). I also learned about the fallacies, the error in reasoning or a defect in an argument other than having false premises, therefore the conclusion does not follow from the premises. There are two general types of fallacies which is the informal fallacies meaning the content of the premises fails to support the conclusion and the formal fallacies meaning form persuades but the argument is invalid. There are 14 common informal fallacies which were discussed today.
- Appeal to pity meaning trying to win support for an argument by exploiting ones feelings,
- Appeal to ignorance meaning the conclusion must be true because there are no evidence against it,
- Equivocation meaning giving a particualr word a different meaning,
- Composition meaning something is true of the whole the fact that it is true of some part of a whole,
- Division meaning something is true of a thing must be true of all or some of its parts,
- Appeal to people an argument that appeals using popularity,
- Appeal to the authority uses authority as evidence,
- Against the person linking the validity of a premise to a characteristic of the person advocating the premise,
- Appeal to forcee, argument where force is used,
- False cause, no connecting causes,
- It does not follow, the conclusion does not follow from the premises,
- Hasty generalization, reading an inductive generalization,
- Red Herring uses an irrelevant topic to avoid or divert attention from the issue,
- Begging the question a proposition to be proven is assumed implicity or explicitly in the premise.
And lastly, we have started discussing about the Philosophical Anthropology.
How is it applicable to my daily life?
I now know what are the informal fallacies which means i can avoid using them when i am arguing with someone. I can apply it so that i can make my arguments better.
